Q&A

Q: Who am I?

A:

My name is Julie Thevenot,

I'm 22 years old, and I live in Lyon (France)

for almost 3 years.

Before that, I've spent most of my life living in the countryside, in Bourgogne, with my family.

However, I decided to move to a big city to get into a Game Design school.

I also spent a year in Texas (USA) by myself, when I was 16. It was an awesome experience, where I got to know the culture, where I could improve my English language, where I visited lots of places and met awesome people from all around the world.

Q: How did I become a Game Designer?

A:

I was just a child when I started playing any kind of games :

  • Board games

  • Outdoor games

  • Video games

  • ...

Games are a big part of our society, it is much more valuable than some people can think. We play games since we're children and we play games all our life.

Games are everywhere around us, not only video games but any kind of games and it's important to understand its value.

I am a game designer who creates mostly video games but I like to get interested in other types of games to create.

I play games since I'm a child, and it has brought me where I am today, because I too, want to create things that can make people feel emotions like I felt them, because I too, want to create things that can make people spend days and nights on it without getting bored, because I too, want to create one of those things that made my life a better one.

Video games are art, just like movies, books or paintings and I want to bring my own contribution to it.

Q: What do I like to do in my spare time?

A:

Just like most Game Developers, I spend some of my spare time playing video games. I really like platformers, puzzle games, a few RPGs, adventure games and I always loved trying indie games. I think they can be as good (or even better) than some AAA!

I like playing with my friends on multiplayer games but sometimes I just love playing by myself and live my own experience.

Playing video game isn't the only thing I do during my spare time.

I love playing board games with my family and friends, my favorite one is Chess, (when I was a teen, I won the regional competition in my category).

I also enjoy reading (mostly novels and mangas), watching movies or tv shows (at home or at the movie theatre), meeting friends and family, going to the museum, cooking, and I recently started to embroider (I'm still a noobie at it though).

Q: What in Game Design did I choose to work the most?

A:

In my school, I have learned many different subjects around Game Design and Game Development.

Game Design, Level Design, Programming, Economic Design, Project Management, and more.

I try to work on most of these subjects but my favorite one is Level Design and this is the reason why I decided to specialize myself in.

I like working on Project Management & Programming but not as much as Level Design obviously, but I feel like both can help me reach my goal. Programming a little can help me show prototypes I can make myself, and Producing can help me work with deadlines and a team.

Level Design is the subject I work on the most. When I started Game Design school, that's the thing I got interested in the most.

Building a world for players, adjusting the difficulty, making challenging levels for some of them, more relaxing for the other ones, and using the game designers' mechanics the best ways I can, to make fun levels to play, is my main goal.

In other words, I love building a world around game mechanics for players to have fun !
